Best Time to
Visit the Maldives

Updated 2025 / 2026 · By Vola Maldives Specialists · 10 min read

The honest answer: the Maldives is beautiful year-round. The archipelago sits just north of the equator, so temperatures stay between 25°C and 32°C in every month. What changes is rainfall, swell patterns, specific wildlife encounters, and — significantly — price.

Understanding the two monsoons lets you pick your perfect window, whether you're chasing manta rays, avoiding school-holiday crowds, or maximising value on a tighter budget.

The Two Seasons

Northeast Monsoon — Dry Season (November to April)

This is the classic Maldives season. Northeast trade winds bring dry, clear weather and calm seas across most atolls. Visibility underwater reaches 20–30 metres. Skies are reliably blue, sunsets are spectacular, and the lagoons are flat enough to enjoy every morning from an overwater villa deck.

The tradeoff: this is high season, so prices peak in December and January, and again around Easter. Resorts fill up early — some signature villas sell out 6–9 months in advance during peak period.

Southwest Monsoon — Wet Season (May to October)

The southwest monsoon brings warmer waters, more cloud cover, and occasional squalls. Crucially, "wet season" in the Maldives rarely means sustained rain — it typically means brief, dramatic downpours followed by clear skies and warm sunlight. Most guests barely notice.

What the wet season brings that the dry season doesn't: significantly lower rates (often 25–40% off peak prices), fewer tourists, and — for divers and marine wildlife enthusiasts — some of the best encounters of the year.

The Most Important Truth About Maldives Seasons

The Maldives is large enough that while the southwest monsoon affects the western atolls, the eastern atolls — including parts of Ari Atoll — often stay drier. Conditions vary by atoll, not just by month. We adjust recommendations accordingly.

Month by Month

January Peak

Dry, calm, perfect visibility. Whale sharks in South Ari Atoll. Fully booked at many resorts — book 6+ months ahead.

February Peak

Consistently the driest month. Excellent for overwater villas and diving. Slightly lower prices than January/December.

March Ideal

Still dry season. Temperatures begin to rise. Schools out in some markets — family resorts get busy. Excellent conditions.

April Ideal

Hottest month (32°C). Shoulder season pricing begins. Easter brings a brief spike. Manta rays begin appearing in Baa Atoll.

May Value

Monsoon begins in western atolls. Baa Atoll manta season starts. Eastern atolls stay drier. Good value with excellent diving.

June Value

Peak manta ray season at Hanifaru Bay, Baa Atoll. Huge aggregations. Best whale shark diving in Ari Atoll. Lower resort prices.

July Value

School holidays bring families. Manta and whale shark encounters remain exceptional. Some afternoon showers but mornings are clear.

August Value

Peak manta aggregations at Hanifaru. European summer holidays — more visitors. Still great value vs. dry season prices.

September Value

Quietest month of the year. Lowest prices. Some resorts run promotions. Marine life encounters still good. Best for budget travellers.

October Value

Monsoon winds down. Conditions improving steadily. Good value still. Whale sharks moving south. Some excellent off-peak dive deals.

November Ideal

Dry season begins. Clear skies return. Calmer seas. Prices start rising for Christmas. Book early if visiting December.

December Peak

Christmas and New Year drive the highest prices and crowds of the year. Magical atmosphere but book 9–12 months in advance for good villas.

Best Months for Wildlife

Manta Rays

The world's largest gathering of manta rays occurs at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Peak season is June through October, with August typically producing the most spectacular aggregations — hundreds of mantas feeding on plankton in a single bay. Even outside peak months, mantas are spotted at cleaning stations across multiple atolls year-round. OZEN Reserve Bolifushi, situated in Baa Atoll, arranges guided snorkelling excursions to Hanifaru Bay during season.

Whale Sharks

South Ari Atoll is the most reliable year-round whale shark location in the world. Encounters are possible every month, with peak sightings from January to April and again from August to November. Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa, located close to the South Ari hotspots, offers dedicated whale shark excursions as part of the resort programme.

Hammerhead Sharks

Rasdhoo Atoll (near Ari Atoll) is famous for hammerhead shark sightings before dawn — serious divers set early morning dive times here. Best encounters are from January to April.

Dolphins

Spinner dolphins are resident across the Maldives year-round. Most resorts run sunset dolphin cruises daily regardless of season.

Best Months for Diving

The dry season (November–April) delivers the best underwater visibility — 20–30 metres is typical on the outer reefs. The wet season brings warmer water temperatures and nutrient-rich currents that attract larger pelagics: whale sharks, manta rays, and schools of hammerheads. Most experienced divers consider May to November the more exciting diving season, even if visibility drops slightly.

Liveaboard Diving

Liveaboard dive safaris are available year-round. The famous 4-Atoll Circuit (North Malé, Ari, Felidhe, Meemu) runs in both seasons. Remote atolls like the Deep South (Addu, Huvadhoo) are best accessed by liveaboard from May to October when southern swells are manageable for the passage.

Prices and Crowds

Peak Season (mid-December to early January, February)

Prices 30–60% above shoulder season. Minimum stay requirements at many resorts (7 nights over Christmas/New Year). Book the best villas 9–12 months in advance. Avoid if budget is a priority.

Shoulder Season (November, March–April)

Excellent conditions, lower prices than peak. March is often the sweet spot: dry weather, no minimum stays, and rates 20–30% below December. April can be hot (32°C+) but still beautiful.

Value Season (May–October)

Best prices of the year, quiet resorts, outstanding marine wildlife. The "wet season" stigma is largely undeserved — most guests in June–August would not describe their trip as rainy. For divers and budget-conscious travellers, this is the secret season.

Our Honest Recommendation

If your dates are flexible and wildlife is a priority — choose June to August in Baa Atoll for mantas. If you want reliably blue skies and flat seas — choose February or March. If you want maximum value — choose September or October. All three are genuinely great.

Best Time for Honeymoons

Any month works for a honeymoon in the Maldives — the destination is inherently romantic. The practical advice: if you're celebrating in December or February (peak Valentine's season), book your villa at least 6 months in advance. Resorts pre-fill with honeymoon couples and the most romantic overwater villas sell first.

For a quieter, more private feel with the resort less busy — October or November are our top picks: the monsoon is ending, conditions are improving daily, prices are still below peak, and you'll often feel like you have the island to yourselves.
