Travel Style

Romance, adventure, family, restoration — the holiday type defines the atoll, the resort category, and the meal plan. We ask this before anything else.

Transfer Type

Seaplanes operate daylight hours only (06:00–15:30). If your flight lands late, you need a speedboat-accessible resort or an extra night in Malé. We check this before confirming any resort.

Villa Type

Overwater villas offer direct lagoon access. Beach villas offer more privacy and space. Sunset orientation adds 15–25% to cost — and is worth it for honeymooners. We match villa type to purpose.

Meal Plan

All-inclusive is not always the best value — in boutique resorts with one restaurant, half-board often gives you more flexibility. We advise on the right plan for your resort and duration.

Atoll

Family holidays in the Maldives work best when the lagoon is shallow enough for children to wade in and the beach villa is big enough for a travel cot and two teenagers. We shortlist by house reef depth, kids' club quality, and whether the all-inclusive covers children's meals and soft drinks. Resorts like Sun Siyam Iru Fushi and Anantara Dhigu are built for this — generous villa sizes, proper kids' clubs, and shallow lagoon sides. A liveaboard is the only way to dive multiple atolls in a single trip — and in the Maldives, that means whale sharks in South Ari, manta rays at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, hammerheads at Rasdhoo, and tiger sharks in the far south, all within a seven-night itinerary. We select vessels by dive guide quality, dive deck layout and the honesty of their itinerary — some boats promise sites they can't reliably reach. Local island guesthouses have transformed Maldives travel in the past decade — you can now stay in clean, well-run accommodation metres from a house reef, share a dhoni with a small group for a whale shark swim, and spend half what a mid-range resort costs. Dhigurah is the standout for whale shark encounters (South Ari Atoll — the world's most reliable year-round site). Thulusdhoo is the surfing island.
